In the late 1940s, with the interest in superheroes waning and comic sales falling, Ace Magazines noticed that there was a new popularity of ager-based humor comics, spearheaded and led by Archie and his buddies. Although Hap Hazard had been around a few years, in 1947 Ace began to energetically shift effort into the humor genre. Four Favorites became a mag overnight and we saw new characters gain their own magazine: Andy #20-21 took over from Scream, which had for a couple issues already been -based; Ernie took over for Andy with issue #22; Four Favorites became Four ers with #34, and then became Dotty from #35-40; Vicky had five issues of her own. Andy, Ernie, Dotty, Vicky, Orville, Lily Belle, etc. were friends and showed up in each others' magazines, and sometimes shared stories. Although refer to by some as “Archie clones” most were vastly different from what the Riverdale gang had become; the stories were more action oriented, somewhat more complex and adult, and the artistry showed the individual style of the illustrator. It was short-lived experiment; by 1949 the comics had become general romance, and Ace Magazines had coupled that with a blast of western and crime comics, which altogether bought them another few years of comic publication success. This collection gathers those great humor titles from 1947-1949! THIS BOOK: FOUR FAVORITES #30-32, FOUR ERS #34, DOTTY #35 (Issue #33 was part of the CRIME MUST PAY THE PENALTY series).
