The Royal Horticultural Society 2002 Diary Calendar
Botanical drawings of medicinal plants, taken from books by two medicinal physicians, illustrate this diary for 2002. William Woodville's "Medical Botany" (1790-1793) contains descriptions and pictures of all the plants in the Royal College of Physicians' list of "materia medica" (plants used in medicine). His illustrator was James Sowerby (1756-1822), the major English botanical artist of his generation. Ferdinand Vietz was an Austrian physician, whose "Icones Plantarum" (1800-1820) was illustrated by Ignaz Alberti, an accomplished Viennese artist. A selection of hand-coloured engravings from each of these books illustrates each week of this diary. National holidays are listed for Britain, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. Religious holidays and astronomical information are also included.
