This series of books was written in response to a lament voiced by a colleague: "No one will ever know I was even here..." It only took five years before I ran out of excuses, stopped dawdling, then finally sat down in front of a blank screen, to face the arduous task of writing out our story. Between August 2010 and Feb 2011, I worked as a Grade 4 teacher at The American International School in Tripoli (from the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli...)At age 57, my husband passed away unexpectedly, leaving me broke, homeless and in shock at losing everything almost overnight. My secure, insular world came crashing down around my ears. So with little choice, I accepted the job offer, left my home of 11 years in southern California, flying off into the wild blue yonder 7000 miles away, to the Sahara Desert, where a whole new world of opportunity opened up. Seven months later, civil war erupted, thrusting us ordinary teachers into a hertofore unexperienced survival mode. At 57, I found myself contemplating how to hijack a jeep to drive across the border, 5 hours out in the desert, and the many unknowns this route would have entailed.We eventually departed via a chartered rescue ferry, signing a blank promissory note. 3 days later we finally landed in Valetta, Malta, breathing a sigh of relief. Then began the 'real' adventure: there was no room in the inn...nor any hotel/motel/pension room. Winding up in the red light district was not ever an option before; however, after sleeping on the floor all week at school, we were grateful to have an off-the-floor mattress.The next day began our new journey, to try and get back to the US - news stories never mention the money-end of things, and for our faculty, we all experienced sudden financial hardships, having paid for plane tickets, only to find the airport closed and no refunds available for many months down the road. All this impacted my life quite severely, sending me in a new direction
