Increasing government control and monitoring, financial cuts and work overload, and vanishing promotion prospects and declining social standing, are some of the sources of stress peculiar to academic life identified by Fisher (psychology, U. of Strathclyde). She also reviews the effects of stress on performance and health, the coping mechanisms, and outside sources of help.
