This is the story of how Charles Arbuthnot McClintock - a Patrician Princetonian from Pittsburgh whose pals regularly joked that his ancestors managed to reach Plymouth Rock before anyone else by secretly commandeering the Mayflowers dinghy and then rowing like crazy - helped make all those Princeton wins possible.Spooks contribution, which began just months before the start of the Great Depression, consisted of quietly scouting six outstanding high school players from industrial towns in Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio, sending them to the Kiskiminetas Springs School in Saltsburg PA for intense post-grad academic catch-up and tutoring for the just-introduced SAT, and then providing them financial and moral support while they were at Princeton. His largely undercover recruitment of the Kiski Kids - who, along with most of their teammates, went on to exemplify Princeton in the Nations Service, the motto that Woodrow Wilson had coined for their alma mater - also aided and abetted the Universitys recruitment of Herbert Fritz Crisler as head football coach. Although Crisler was the first non-Princetonian to fill the position, he maintained cordial, on-going dialogues with university alumni and even regularly conferred with Scott Fitzgerald on game day strategy. After seven seasons at Princeton Crisler left to become head coach and athletic director at the University of Michigan, where - partly in recognition of the helmet graphics he developed for Princeton but then purloined - his name now graces the U of Ms indoor gymnastics and basketball arena.
